Woodrow’s Ben Nevis 18 Year Old is a robust, characterful Highland malt, shaped by long ageing and a measured sherry influence that adds depth without overwhelming the distillate.
Deep amber in the glass, with a rich, slightly rugged nose of dried fruits, stewed plum, and raisin, layered with toasted nuts, cocoa, and a touch of leather. There is a savoury, faintly smoky edge typical of the distillery, alongside hints of orange peel and spice. The palate is full and textured, with a weighty, almost oily mouthfeel carrying flavours of dark fruit, treacle, and roasted coffee, balanced by sherry-driven sweetness and a gentle tannic grip. The second fill cask keeps things in check, allowing earthy, mineral notes and a subtle salinity to come through. The finish is long, warming, and complex, with lingering spice, dried fruit, and a slightly dry, nutty fade.
Distilled at Ben Nevis Distillery and laid down in 2007, this single malt matured for 18 years, including time in a second fill Oloroso hogshead that brings structure and nuance rather than overt sweetness. Bottled by Woodrow’s of Edinburgh at natural cask strength, it is presented without chill filtration or added colour, with a total outturn of just 339 bottles.
Ben Nevis is known for producing weighty, slightly idiosyncratic spirit, and this cask leans into that house style while adding a polished layer of sherry complexity.
